Health Inequalities
Join Us for The Philosopher's Yard Meetup: Exploring "Health Inequalities"
In this session, we will turn our attention to Health Inequalities. What factors most strongly shape how healthy someone is? Is health influenced more by personal choices or by the social conditions we live in? How do factors such as income, education, geographic location, gender, or race affect the level and quality of healthcare people receive? And have you ever felt dismissed, unheard, or misunderstood in a healthcare setting? (You do not need to share personal details.)

Our discussion will be introduced by Dr Chevonne Risbrooke, a Trinidadian-born specialist trainee in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the West Midlands. Alongside her medical degree, Chevonne holds a Bachelor’s degree in Health Management and Leadership, with research focused on health inequalities in maternity care and access to mental health services.
Drawing on her personal and professional experience working in women’s health, Chevonne will explore whether health inequalities arise from the design of healthcare systems themselves or from wider societal structures. She will discuss how gender contributes to significant gaps in the healthcare women receive - including the slower development of advancements in women’s health - and consider what we can do to close these gaps and advocate for those most affected.
The evening will also include a short pre-recorded introduction from Neelam Heera-Shergill, founder of Cysters, a charity supporting people facing reproductive, mental, and maternal health inequalities, particularly in marginalised communities.
As always, The Philosopher’s Yard provides a welcoming space for thoughtful dialogue and reflection. Whether you are well-versed in philosophy or simply curious, this is an opportunity to share perspectives and engage with others in a friendly, open environment.
The event will take place at BRIG Café at The Warehouse, located in Birmingham city centre.

Justice & Fairness
In this session, we turned our attention to Justice & Fairness: How would you define justice and fairness? Should upbringing or luck affect what someone is entitled to or how they are treated? How would we set up society if we wanted no one to be treated unfairly or unjustly?
